Photos later released by prosecutors that were found on the Barahona's' family camera revealed years of abuse endured by Nubia and her brother. Nubia and her brother suffered from physical abuse, psychological maltreatment, and neglect. The first signs of abuse came when Nubia was in Kindergarten. After having an accident at school, she told her teacher that her mother would hit her (M,2015). Subsequently, multiple complaints would be made to the abuse hotline primarily by school personnel, who had noticed the children were constantly dirty, hungry, had a foul smell, and came to school with bruises. When DFC would investigate, the Barahona's were deceitful and at one point even used Nubia's medical condition as an excuse for her poor hygiene. Unfortunately, none of these reports were substantiated and eventually the children were withdrawn from school to be home-schooled. On February 10th,  an investigator showed up for one final visit to the home in response to call that have been made concerning the twins being held tied up in the bathroom of their home (DFCs report).
