Assignment Choice A: Peruse the literature (via Google, online nursing journals. or the Rutgers Library) to locate a synopsis or case study of a legal case against an RN. Discuss the background of the case including what happened to the patient, the actions of the nurse, and what was the legal outcome of the case (i.e. did the RN lose their license, did they have to pay damages, were they found guilty, not guilty.) Be sure to include any elements of negligence as per the Nurses’ Code of Ethics that the nurse was accused of violating. Be sure to briefly discuss the concepts of Malpractice including the components required to be present in order to move forth a case of malpractice. Include any breech in the Standards of Professional Nursing Care (as previously discussed in class) that were relative to the case.  

Assignment Choice B : Peruse the literature (via Google, online nursing journals. or the Rutgers Library) to locate a synopsis of a legal case in which a Patient’s Rights were somehow violated.  Discuss the background of the case including what happened to the patient, who were involved in the violation, what violations were involved, the actions of the nurse, the patient outcome, and whether a legal case ensued (i.e. did the RN lose their job or license, did they have to pay damages, were they found guilty, not guilty.) Did the nurse violate elements of the Nurses’ Code of Ethics, if so how? Also discuss the concepts of Patient Rights and Informed Consent in patient care.

Assignment Choice C: Students will peruse the NJ Board of Nursing Disciplinary Notice Page (https://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/nur/Pages/actions.aspx) and choose one case where a nurse was disciplined for violating the New Jersey Nurse Practice Act or Licenses Standards as outlined by the NJBON. (There are many cases listed so be sure to pick a case that has been closed that way you are getting a completed case). Please provide background to the case, including what the initial charge(s) was (what was the accused of doing), how the nurse pled (guilty or not guilty) and what the conclusion to the case was i.e. loss or suspension of license, fine, jail time etc. Also discuss whether the nurse violated any elements of the Nurses’ Code of Ethics, Patient Rights, Informed Consent, and/or the Standards of Professional Nursing Care as discussed in this week’s reading.
