A theme that I noticed as the main theme was Werner Herzog’s comparison of the mission to find El Dorado to the Nazis’ failed global dominance. He does this by using Aguirre, the film’s protagonist, to represent Germany’s troubled past. Aguire’s actions throughout the film portray him as greedy, deceitful, and egocentric. The film criticizes German culture and identity by depicting his nation’s greedy ambition. It also shows how power may corrupt even the best-intentioned, like Aguirre, and the dangers of greed. Herzog shows this by having Aguire lose everything and end up alone at the end of the movie. What makes the film accepted by international audiences is Herzog’s cinematic style. Herzog’s long takes, beautiful scenery, and music add to the aesthetic and philosophical depth of the film, which is why it is popular all over the world.
