Topic sentence/ Thesis
The first sentence of a paragraph is the topic sentence.
The topic sentence sets the tone for the rest of the paragraph, but for this assignment, your topic sentence is also your thesis.
As we covered earlier, a thesis requires a subject and a focus. For this paper, your subject is the fiction (such as Mickey Mouse) and your focus is the group that invests some belief in Mickey (Disney Fans). This serves as the opening to the paragraph.
Support
Describe the group that gathers around the fiction. For the Mickey example, how would you describe a Mickey fan? One way to describe a group or community is to talk about their shared beliefs and values. These can include:
Beliefs
Values
Morals
Ideologies
Rules
Uniforms
In the support section, provide two to three examples of beliefs, values, morals, ideologies, rules or uniforms that the group invests in. What values do Disney fans believe in? What positive values does Mickey represent? Do the ‘Mickey believers’ practice these values? Do the beliefs in Mickey have a function or purpose?
Body Paragraph Style Points:
Show, Don’t Tell
Use the show don’t tell technique we covered in this module. Don’t tell the reader about a group who believes in Mickey Mouse. Show the group!
Conclusion
Are you part of the group? If so, do you advocate for others to join the group. If you are not part of the group, discourage the reader from joining the group. This concluding point is no more than two to three sentences.
