The uses of the word bull throughout the story show not only the lack of self-awareness towards his own stereotype, but also the lack of self-awareness towards the racism as well. The sterotype depicted in the story is that Irisha are stupid and foolish and are like bulls meaning like they are like brutes who will destroy things if things do not go the way that they want them to go. However, as we know the protagonist is a smart and rational individual so, this sterotype does not true, contradicting this sterotype to show that not Irish people are stupid, and foolish. It is only when O’Mooney uses certain words or if the way he speaks changes, then people find out that he is Irish, and then this same steroptype is placed on him. For example, “A bull! A bull! An Irish bull! Did you hear the question this Irish gentleman asked his countryman?”(Edgeworth 239). This quote precisely shows the reaction of how he speaks when he is being that hes being labeled this way because of the way of how he speaks instead of his real intentions.
