Post a reflection on two to three key points of learning throughout the course.
Two key points of learning throughout the course that I will reflect on are dynamics within group and family therapy and components of group development. Communication styles and patterns, unity and cohesion, social and interactional patterns, and power structures and status are elements that influence the culture and outcomes of treatment (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). It is important that the group leader is frequently assessing these factors and demonstrate leadership skills such as engaging members through empowerment and sharing power, attending skills, and effective confrontation and problem-solving skills to facilitate an effective group environment that influence group and individual goals to be achieved (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Additionally, we learned about the process and components of developing a group that would meet the needs of individuals within a community or population that include, defining the group purpose, membership, and assessing treatment interventions.
Also describe your preferences in terms of working with groups or with families. Which are you more drawn to?
In terms of group work, I am drawn to working with families mostly because of the factors within family dynamics that seem to be too challenging. Some of these include engaging unwilling members, and addressing maladaptive communication styles that have been longstanding, strengthening relationship quality amongst members, and addressing lack of resources to meet the needs of the family. In addition to these challenges, family work may require more time to achieve change. I feel more confident going into family group as I developed skills and knowledge throughout my MSW journey and within this course to intervene and support the well-being of families.
Then, based on the self-assessment and your growth throughout the course, describe one strength and one improvement area for each type of social work (group and family).
Based on my own assessment and growth throughout this course, one area of strength for group work is developing a structured and safe environment for members to easily follow the group process, promote vulnerability and engagement by members, foster positive change, and build positive connections. Areas of strength for family work is understanding factors that negatively impact and influence the course of treatment, strategies to effectively engage with the family, and establishing rapport with all members. One area of improvement for both group and family work is effectively addressing conflicts and hostile behaviors that arise during the working process.
