Unlike The Holy Lance, Tolkien’s work is neo-medievalist, set in a medieval-inspired fantasy world. In other words, it’s not based on the historical past, and therefore, it does not attempt to portray the Middle Ages in a realistic way. Looking back at your reading, choose three details from the text and explain how they help make it clear to the reader that this is not a realistic portrayal of the historical Middle Ages.
If you had to choose one of Eco’s “Three Little Middle Ages” from Week 2 (see “How Is Popular Medievalism Constructed?”) to apply to The Return of the King, which would you choose, and why?
This excerpt depicts Middle-Earth at war. How do the characters seem to feel about the violence? Do their attitudes towards the war seems modern or medieval to you?
