When I was growing up, I was the classic “troubled” kid. I came from a broken home, suffered extreme poverty, and had no parental guidance. I was the only child, and even my extended family had a hard time with me. Writing was the last thing on my mind; I was barely literate. I struggled to get by in school and put forth very little effort in anything related to academics. I was not particularly aware of the power of literature or writing and didn’t understand why my teachers were so adamant about making me learn more about them.
I had basically resigned myself to a life of ignorance, cut off from the world that I so desperately wanted to understand. I felt like I was in a fog, confused and without real direction. I struggled to make sense of this world with my limited understanding until one day, I stumbled into a local library and awoke to a new source of knowledge.
When I walked into this library, I was immediately captivated by the sheer size and variety of books that it contained. I was also taken aback by the peace. I had never experienced a place so at ease and tranquil yet full of energy and possibilities. I spent the next few days there, devouring every book I could lay my hands on.
This library gave me hope and inspiration. I started to understand the power of writing, much more than the teachers tried to convey in the classroom. I realized that literature was not just about memorizing facts but about understanding and empathizing with the characters contained within the stories.
I saw how in some ways, this new world was more real to me than the one I saw outside my window. I eventually learned to read proficiently and gained a lifelong passion for literature.
Writing became therapy, a way to make sense of my life, express my thoughts and feelings, and comment on society. I also found a way to keep myself entertained and content as an only child; I knew my imagination and a newfound love for words was enough to keep me going.

Writing kept me entertained and my imagination running free. I found that my newfound love for words and my imagination were powerful enough to get me through those lonely days.

The power of writing and literature is undeniable, and I will remain forever grateful for my unexpected discovery in that local library. Through that library, I could find myself, my identity, and my purpose and express and realize my potential. Through that library, I finally understood the importance of literacy and knowledge, and I strive every day to remember and spread the message of its empowering effects.
