The story begins in England with one narrator, but quickly changes to another as Marlow tells his tale. What do you think of this way of presenting the story? Was it necessary? Why? Why not?

Kurtz is the goal of Marlow’s travel and through the story we are given many accounts on the man. He is described very differently from how Marlow finds him. Give some examples of how, and how they are different from the real Kurtz.

How do you feel about Conrad’s depiction of the natives of Congo? Do you think they are racist? How? Do you think they would have been considered racist when the book was written? Why? Why not?

In this book, Kurtz represents Belgium’s exploitation of the African Continent. Do you think the other Powers at the time did similar things? Do you think this kind of exploitation is still going on today? Do you know of any??
