Topic One:
Compare the depiction of the protagonists of two different films, or two main characters in the
same film. Explain these characters and their personalities. In your view, what are their
motivations, their hopes, their ambitions? Their fears? What are their most important
relationships? What do they want out of life? Do they get what they want by the end of the
film? Where do we see moments of crisis? What specific challenges or obstacles and options
do they face, and how do they respond to these obstacles? What does this show us about
them? How do the characters change or evolve over the course of the film? Does the film
endorse or criticize the choices of these characters, or is it clear? What is the film(s) showing or
implying about some aspect of the refugee experience through its dramatization of these two
characters? Major Characters: Yusra and Sara in The Swimmers; Waad and Hamza in For Sama;
Zain and Rahil in Capernaum.
Topic Two: All of these films are by female directors. The Swimmers and For Sama provide
particularly female points of view on living through the Syrian war and deciding to leave the
Syrian homeland. Capernaum provides a child’s-eye and a young mother’s point of view on
being undocumented (Zaid) and stateless (Rahil is a refugee). Select one of these films to
discuss its representation of female experience or female concerns. All three stories are told
differently from the genres of the traditional male war movie, action movie, or road movie
(or sports movie, in the case of the Swimmers) genres which tend to focus on heroism,
individualism, adventure, the testing of strength, courage under fire, direct confrontation
with the enemy, a final triumphant victory, postwar PTSD, etc. What do these female and
civilian accounts include, exclude, emphasize? What does war/a refugee
journey/statelessness look like from the non-traditional perspective of these films? And
what are some of the specific devices and strategies these films use to center a female
perspective?
