Okay, so I’m trying to make a short story for my english class, its supposed to be three pages long. I kind of had an idea, but I can’t figure out a way to expand it beyond one page, I need to figure out where I can maybe incorporate dialogue and some conflict, I’m not sure how or where though, If you could help me expand this very rough first draft and figure out where to go from there it would be greatly appreciated.
Rough draft—
Deep beneath the ocean waves, a strange and wondrous creature dwelled, far away from the eyes of the human race. The creature was not a whale, and yet it shared certain traits and characteristics of a whale. It had a broad, flat tail and a streamlined, muscular body. It swam swiftly through the sea, leaving only a wake of sparkles and waves behind it.
This was no ordinary whale, however. This creature was of a species so unique and unknown that not even the other sea creatures, who were more than aware of their neighbor’s strange and peculiar form, could decipher its identity. All anyone knew for certain was that the creature was both incredibly solitary and incredibly lonesome.
The creature had been in the depths of the sea for what felt like an eternity, yet its memory of its own world remained as clear as the waters of its home. It remembered the crystal blue seas of its homeland and the various shapes and sizes of the aquatic species with which it shared the waters. Yet its people were long gone now, a remnant of a forgotten past.
It had survived its world’s extinction and landed upon the unfamiliar and strange lands of Earth. Stranded and confused, it tried its best to blend in, mimicking the behavior and vocalizations of the various whales it encountered. But its efforts were to no avail. The local species were unfamiliar with this newcomer and spoke an unknown language.
For days and weeks and months, the creature endured the endless loneliness and lack of companionship as it tried desperately to understand and make contact with the native whale species. Yet it was fruitless, as every attempt seemed only to distance the whale more and more from the others.
But then one day, something miraculous happened. The creature made its first real contact with another creature of its kind. The native whale spoke in an unknown dialect and a new type of vocalization that the creature had never heard before. But it seemed to understand the whale’s language and felt a wave of joy course through its body as the two whales spoke to one another.
The creature was overwhelmed with emotion as it realized that it was not alone in the world. It had found another creature, and finally it had someone to speak with and confide in. After so long being alone, the creature finally felt connected with another.
It would still have a long road ahead of it before it could truly fit in with the other whales and speak their language, but the creature felt hope that its species could find a new home in the depths of the sea, even if it was thousands of miles away from where they once resided
