Active listening assignment
Instructions:
Engage in a listening situation (i.e. a class lecture, a conversation, a work meeting, and so on), trying to be an active listener. Apply the tips about active listening explained in the course notes. Write a three-paragraph report that is approximately one page in length about your listening experience. Your self-reflection will ultimately help you improve your overall communication skills. Each of the three paragraphs of the report has specific requirements, and these requirements are outlined in the assignment description.
Your report should include the following:
Paragraph 1: Setting and Approach – Describe, in detail, the listening situation you chose. Provide the date, time, place, duration, and any other pertinent details.
Paragraph 2: How did it go?
Reflect on your listening. You may consider answering the following questions:
What kind of listener are you?
When you are listening, do you take responsibility for your part of the conversation? Do you use any cues to indicate you are listening?
Does your environment affect your conversation? Did you notice any barriers to listening?
Did your application of active listening tips affect your conversation? How?
If it did not affect your conversation, why not?
Paragraph 3: Listening and Your Career – In this paragraph, identify the importance of listening in your field of study. Is it important? Why or why not? When? With whom?
