2.2 Assignment. Leadership and Conflict

Getting Started

Two jousters

As we lead, we will inevitably end up needing to lead our families, teams, and organizations through conflict. The better prepared we can be for these times of conflict, the easier it will be to lead when the conflict arises. This week you will be introduced to conflict resolution tools via Chapter 11 from  Introduction to Leadership by Northouse and via a video called 4 Paths to Resolving Conflict. You will then apply these tools by considering a recent conflict you have either participated in or witnessed. By taking time to think through why this conflict either was or was not resolved well, you will become better prepared for the next conflict you find yourself in.

1. Read Chapter 11 from  Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice 5th ed. (90-120 minutes)

3. Write a paper addressing the prompts below:

a. Consider a conflict you have either participated in or have witnessed in your organization. Identify the organization, who was involved in the conflict, and what happened. (250-500 words)

b. Using the tools from the Northouse chapter and the video, analyze why the conflict occurred. If the conflict was handled well, use the tools from the Northouse chapter and the video to identify what those in the conflict did to help reach this good outcome. If the conflict was not handled well, use the tools from the Northouse chapter and the video to identify what those in the conflict did that escalated the conflict. Likely you will have witnessed some good things and some bad things occurring within the conflict, so feel free to identify both. (250-500 words)

c. Conflicts often involve difficult conversations. Use the tools you developed in LDR-415: Communication for Leaders to analyze how these difficult conversations were handled and how that contributed to a positive or negative resolution for the conflict. (250-500 words)
