Purpose

In this unit you will again assume the persona of an individual who takes a stand on an important issue of the day in the first half of the 19th century. This time the issue you are concerned with is the removal of the Cherokee from their ancestral homelands and their forced location to Oklahoma Territory.

Task

A well written discussion post for Unit 5 will:

Show an understanding of different perspectives from those directly or indirectly affected by the Cherokee Removal from Georgia and provide support for these positions.

Your discussion post should be written and formatted as follows:

· In two (2) paragraphs, assume the role of your assigned historical persona and do the following:

· In paragraph 1, introduce yourself describing your persona, as well as your perspective on the Cherokee in Georgia. DO NOT INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT IS NOT SUPPORTED FROM THE DOCUMENTS PROVIDED.

· In paragraph 2, provide an argument for or against Cherokee removal from their ancestral homelands in the Southeast to a reservation in Indian Territory.

· Be sure to make direct references to the primary document for your assigned character.

· Your posting should contain a minimum of 2 paragraphs, with each paragraph containing 5+ sentences each.

Who is my assigned persona?

In this discussion, you will engage in a debate about removal by adopting the persona of someone who participated in the discussion at that time:

· Pro-removal Cherokee citizen (John Ridge, Sept. 22, 1833: " ")

· Anti-removal Cherokee citizen (John Ross, June 21,1836: excerpt from " "

· Pro-removal US politician ( , December 6, 1830)

· Pro-removal state politician ( , May 20, 1818)

· Anti-removal white reformer (" ")

***NOTE *** As you read through these websites above, you'll see the original document. Some are hard to read. However, if you scroll down the page, you'll see a link to "Show full description" under the item "transcription." The transcribed versions are much easier to read!

Criteria

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND regarding what your instructor is looking for:

· There is not a tremendous amount of information about the Cherokee removal in the American Yawp. As such, your support for your discussion post should come from primarily from the linked sources describing each historical persona. You MUST reference (unofficially) the assigned document for your person…and you may use additional outside sources, but only if you reference them clearly.

· While direct citations are not required, please be sure you clearly refer back to the text to reference content you include in your post. It should be evident that you have read and understood the readings.

· IMPRESS YOUR INSTRUCTOR by ALSO using your understanding of the U.S. Constitution from earlier in then course to bolster your assigned persona's support for or against Cherokee removal. Reference this support clearly in your post.
