The goal of this project is for you to demonstrate your understanding of functional neuroanatomy.

The goal of this project is for you to demonstrate your understanding of functional neuroanatomy.

    • You will be the first to choose a behavioral scenario (e.g., driving a car). A simple scenario works best for this assignment. Next, you will provide a brief description of each structure/region listed in the table provided. Lastly, you will explain the function of that brain structure/region as it relates to behavior in your scenario.
    • You will only use one scenerio to complete the entire assignment. Every box should be filled in
    • Obviously, many brain structures are operating simply because the person is conscious and active. Please focus on areas related to your chosen scenario.
    • Be sure to appropriately give credit to your sources (e.g., APA style citations and references). Note that you may have to use scholarly sources other than your textbook for descriptions of certain regions.

Example: Scenario: Driving a carBrain RegionDescription of Brain RegionThe function of Brain Region in ScenarioHippocampusThe hippocampus is a horseshoe-shaped part of the limbic system, involved in learning and memory (Witter & Amaral, 2004). This region is particularly important for forming new long-term memories (Freberg, 2019).  Needed for remembering where you left your keys, the address of the house you are driving to, and the names of the streets.

USEFUL NOTES FOR:

functional neuroanatomy.

Introduction

The human brain is a complex organ that performs many functions. The brain is divided into three divisions: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.

The forebrain includes the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of gray matter), cerebellum (the lower part of the brain) and basal ganglia (a group of interconnected structures mainly located in the midbrain). The midbrain includes the mesencephalon (the upper part of the hindbrain) and pons.

The hindbrain includes all parts below the thalamus, including all visceral organs such as lungs, heart and kidneys. These organs are connected by nerves that originate from both sides of each organ’s body wall.”

Controlling movement of body

The brain is divided into three major divisions: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Forebrain consists of cerebral cortex and thalamus; midbrain contains tectum and tegmentum; hindbrain includes pons or medulla oblongata (the dorsal part) to tail end of spinal column.

The forebrain has two parts: cerebral cortex which is responsible for higher cognitive functions like reasoning and decision making; basal ganglia which controls voluntary movement along with its connections to other parts like cerebellum, septum pellucidus etc., hippocampus which plays role in memory formation etc., amygdala which initiates fear response when we hear or see something scary while amygdala also receives sensory input from other parts such as eye retinae etc., hypothalamus controls body temperature through pituitary gland located below it which regulates secretion levels during sleep cycle or wakefulness states depending upon external conditions such as temperature level outside our bodies (warm vs cold).

Processing and integration of sensory input

The brain receives sensory information from the receptors in your body. This information is then sent to the brain through the spinal cord, where it’s processed and integrated into what we call “processing.” The processing takes place at each level of your nervous system:

Invertebrates (like worms) have only one centralized processing center called a ganglion; they don’t have brains! Their bodies are linked together so that if one part gets hurt, they all feel pain as well.

Vertebrates have more complex brains with several different areas working together to make decisions about what should happen next. Humans have 100 billion neurons in our brains! Our brains can do things like remember facts or figure out how to make new ones—they’re amazing!

Formation, storage and retrieval of memory

The formation of memory is a process involving the hippocampus, which converts short-term to long-term memories. The amygdala is involved in storing memories and retrieving them; it also plays a role in emotional responses.

The retrieval process involves the frontal lobes (the part of your brain behind your forehead) and temporal lobes (the part of your brain on either side of your head).

Mediating the sleep-wake cycle and associated behaviours, such as appetite and sexual activity.

The hypothalamus is a small region at the base of your brain that regulates many of your body’s essential functions, including sleep cycles and appetite. It also plays a role in controlling sexual behavior.

The hypothalamus is part of an ancient part of our brain called our limbic system (also called “the emotional lobe”). Other parts include: amygdala, hippocampus and thalamus.

brain is divided into three major divisions- forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.

The forebrain is divided into the cerebral cortex and related structures, which make up the majority of the brain. The midbrain consists of three parts: the tectum (the roof), tegmentum (the floor) and mesencephalon. The hindbrain includes four regions: cerebellum, pons and medulla oblongata.

The human brain is composed of several hundred million neurons connected by billions of synapses. This network creates complex patterns that allow us to think, feel and act in ways that are unique to us as individuals

Conclusion

The brain is the most complex organ in our body, since it has to perform a variety of functions such as controlling movement, processing and integration of sensory input, forming memory and mediating sleep-wake cycle. All these require tremendous amount of energy which comes from food intake. Our brain needs a constant supply of oxygen which must be supplied by blood vessels located outside the skull. So it is not surprising that there are many diseases affecting this part of our anatomy such as stroke or heart attack.
