Independence of Texas & The Missouri Compromise
Introduction
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 is a compromise between the North and South which allowed for the admission of Maine into the union as well as for slavery to be allowed in Missouri (which was not part of the original Northwest Territory), but required that all future states be free of slavery.
Texas Independence
Texas was a Mexican state. Mexico was fighting a war with the US, but they lost and Texas became independent from Mexico in 1836.
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was a temporary agreement between the Northern and Southern states. It was signed on March 6, 1820 and passed by Congress and signed by President James Monroe.
The Missouri Compromise established that:
The western boundary of Missouri would be 36° 30′ north latitude
That Louisiana would become a state north of 36° 30′ north latitude (so it could join with Texas)
Mexican American War
The Mexican-American War was fought between 1846 and 1848, when it became clear that Mexico could not be trusted to keep its word.
In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war, Mexico ceded 75% of its land to the United States. This included what is now California, Arizona and New Mexico (which then belonged to Spain). The U.S also gained a large amount of territory in Texas and Hawaii as well as some islands off its coast such as Guam (then known as Isla de Filipinas) or Wake Island; these were all acquired through purchase rather than conquest because they weren’t considered part of Mexico’s original borders at all!
Critical Thinking
You will be asked to do a critical-thinking activity about the Missouri Compromise, the Annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War.
What is a compromise?
When did it happen?
Why was it important?
How did it affect American history at that time period?
to understand how the Missouri Compromise, the Annexation of Texas, and the Mexican-American war are related.
The Missouri Compromise, the Annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War can all be tied to one another. The Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery in any territory north of a line extending from
the southern border of Missouri through latitude 36°30′ north. This was intended to preserve peace between slave states and free states by preventing further expansion into territory claimed by both sides.
The annexation of Texas caused an uproar among many northerners; they felt that this would add more slaves to an already slave-owning nation. They also worried about what might happen if Mexico decided not want its former colonies back after independence from Spain (it didn’t).
Conclusion
To conclude, The Missouri Compromise was the reason why Texas became a state. It was also the reason why Mexico lost its war with America. This is because they couldn’t support their troops anymore after Texas joined the U.S., so they could no longer fight against them. Also, if we look at what happened during this war it shows that it wasn’t just about territory but about freedom for all people who wanted independence from Spain once again!
