Recovering Voices: Restoring Marginalized Voices from the Periphery to the Center

Recovering Voices: Restoring Marginalized Voices from the Periphery to the CenterResearch Essay: “Recovering Voices: Restoring Marginalized Voices from the Periphery to the Center” (25%) Research Essay:By studying marginalized voices, you will explore the cultural, political, religious, and economic factors that normalized power and privilege in a particular time/place. History, all too often, is told from the perspective of the politically and socially powerful. Intellectual and religious outliers, people who refused to conform to sexual and gender norms were not only marginalized in their time, but still remain on the margins of history today. Their stories, more often than not, are lost to the narratives of the dominant and powerful. In an effort to create a more inclusive narrative, to make the invisible, visible, each student must select a research topic that in some way explores the historical experiences and significance of marginalized groups (or movements or beliefs or ideas) and research their histories.Students must select their topic by September 20th and submit a research proposal form that includes a preliminary bibliography for approval via WebAccess. Students may submit a draft of their research essay for my review. Final research essays are due by Nov. 23 via WebAccess.Essays must be five to seven pages in length and use both primary and secondary sources. All essays must be typed, double-spaced, with 1’’ margins and 12 point font. I will provide you with detailed guidelines and a grading rubric. Students may submit drafts of their essay for my review. If you would like me to read a draft of your essay, it must be submitted before November 1. Final submissions must be turned in to WEBACCESS by November 25. If you submitted draft(s) for my review, you must include these with you final, revised essay.
