Nurses are part of the group required to adopt these systems (Rippen, Scott, Hartley, & American Medical Association, 2013).In a hearing conducted by the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics on Meaningful Use of health information technology (HIT), the participants emphasized the significance of integrating HIT in the health industry. The use of HIT should include interoperability that supports clinical decisions and quality measures (Rippen et al., 2013).Therefore, this paper discusses implications to nurses, nursing profession, the national health policy, treatment outcomes, and population health associated with the collection and use of Meaningful Use core criteria.The paper includes a general overview of the program, analysis of the implications of meaningful use, and evidence based recommendations for the additional core criteria. Overview of Meaningful Use The government of the United States introduced the Meaningful Use (MU) program as component of the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act for the purposes of encouraging health providers to show meaningful use of their certified EHR systems (Rippen et al., 2013).Eligible providers that demonstrated meaningful use would receive incentive payments under the program. The MU program seeks to encourage widespread adoption of EHRs to enable the health system create an infrastructure for improving quality, safety, and efficiency of health organizations and practitioners (Rippen et al., 2013).Eligible providers under the MU program must adopt certified EHRs and use it meaningfully by meeting the requirements set for improving patient care.The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created these measures to advance health IT in the country.
