Analysis and Application of a Clinical Practice GuidelinePrevention and Treatment of Surgical Site InfectionThe purpose of this paper is to analyze and critique a clinical practice guideline (CPG) inorder to apply and disseminate the information provided in the research. This paper will review aCPG on surgical site infections (SSI). It will discuss the scope and purpose of the CPG, thestakeholder and their involvement, the rigor and development, the recommendations, and theapplication of the guidelines.Scope and Purpose of the Clinical Practice GuidelineAn SSI is an infection that presents after surgery in the location of the body in which thesurgery took place. The scope and purpose of this document are to help practitioners and theirpatients in making decisions in relation to the correct treatment for a specific condition. Thisguidance will continue throughout all of the surgical phases: preoperative, intraoperative, andpostoperative phases. This guideline compliments other similar studies such as the NationalInstitute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for referencing. This guideline also providesan update on the agents being used for debridement and wound care centers that specialize insurgical wounds to help heal complex wounds (National Collaborating Centre for Women’s andChildren’s Health, 2011).The target population in this CPG are any patients who are having surgery. This clinicalguideline involves several clinical specialties such as: family practice physicians, internalmedicine physicians, registered nurses, preventative medicine, and the surgical staff.
