Understanding teoretical framework, and the methods for studying cultural artifacts such as film
Uncategorized
In this module we discussed approach, theoretical framework, and the methods for studying cultural artifacts such as film.
We looked at what it means to take an ideological approach to studying cultural artifacts such as film. It meant that we would study the systems of power related to identity i.e. gender, race, economic class, sexuality, religion, nationhood etc.
We also defined theoretical framework as a fancy term to describe concepts or issues from articles and books usually written by scholars that engage some issue that helps frame the study of a film. If we can identify concepts or issues from scholarly sources then we can use those ideas to frame our study of cultural artifacts.
We discussed methods. Kellner states that good cultural studies scholarship includes the textual analysis of the cultural artifact. We studies film studies methods and the terms associated with film making.
Employing the methods of cultural studies should also offer the moment to understand the political economy behind the creation of the cultural artifact (film) and the way in which the film was received by audiences. I said that I use the term archive sources to describe the sources that are created subsequent to the film that address audience reception and political economy.
Now, I ask that you demonstrate your understanding of these two types of archive sources. Please answer the following prompts THROUGHLY, showing me you understand the approach, theoretical framework, and the methods for studying cultural artifacts such as film.
1. Name your favorite film and its director.
2. Find one archive source that addresses the audience reception of your favorite film. Name this source by author and title. Then provide an explanation as to why this source can be considered an archive source that addresses audience reception. If the source has page numbers cite those page numbers here.
3. Find one archive source that addresses the political economy of your favorite film. Name this source by author and title. Then provide an explanation as to why this source can be considered an archive source that addresses the political economy of making this film. If the source has page numbers cite those page numbers here.
4. Include a works cited entry for your favorite film, the audience reception source, and the source that addressed political economy. Include URLs for all archive sources. You should have three works cited entries.
