history of jazz concert report

The Concert Report requirement for this class has been modified for Winter, 2022 due to the current Covid 19 restrictions.  Rather than attending a live jazz performance, you will need to find a LIVE jazz performance on youtube and write your report as if you were actually in attendance.

VIDEO PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Here are the specific requirements for the live youtube performance:

1) It must be a live video showing members of the band as they perform rather than audio only.

2) It must be a minimum of 30 minutes in length

3) It must be a jazz artist or band specifically mentioned in the book or in class or from the list of videos provided by me.  We are trying to avoid those types of genres would not be considered jazz, i.e. rock, pop, broadway, etc.

4) You are more than welcome to find a video of a live jazz performance on your own, but please make sure that all of the above requirements are met, i.e. minimum of 30 minutes, etc.  If you are unsure of what would be suitable for this requirement, it might be best to select from the approved list below.

CONCERT REPORT REQUIREMENTS:

The concert report should be at least 1.5 to 2 pages in length (400 – 500 words) and may be double spaced.  The report should contain:

  1. Names of all the performers if it is a small ensemble, or the name of the band director if listening to a jazz band.
  2. Names of pieces that were played and who they were written by if available.
  3. The style of the tunes they are playing, i.e. blues, swing, hard bop, bebop, fusion, etc.  If you are unsure, give me your best guess as to what style you think they are playing.
  4. Your reactions to the performance using your own words. You will not be graded on your reaction to the performance, so be honest.  List both positive and negative aspects of the performance when appropriate.  Talk about the soloists and what they were doing during the performance. Were they creative? Boring? Personable? Discuss the balance of the ensemble. Could you hear all of the instruments? Were they in tune? Too loud? Too soft?  You are the jazz critic here, so based on what you have gathered from the course, give me your reaction to the performance.

DUE DATE:  The Concert Report is due no later than midnight on Thursday, Feb 3.

FORMAT:  You may upload either pdf or word docs.
