Essay 1 – Data

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate an understanding of data from the:
  • Theoretical Point of View
  • Data Framework Point of View
• Exercise written communication skills and ability to develop a logical argument and pithy explication
• Exercise strategic reading skills

Instructions

1. Write an essay arguing for your preferred definition of data and explaining why data is so important in today’s world.
   1. Be sure to compare and contrast your definition with at least three of those proposed or described by Floridi and Furner. Note: If you are not arguing for one of the ones described by Floridi or Furner (or one of the listed data frameworks), be sure to cite the source of your definition (this must be from an academic paper, technical website, or other authoritative source).
   2. Your essay should be no longer than 500 words (approximately 1 page)
   3. Be sure to include a section on references for any papers you cite.
      1. This section does not count towards the word count
      2. Cite as many documents as necessary but based on the above instructions a minimum of two is likely.
