Project Summary

In recent years refugee displacement has become an international issue of unprecedented scale. The issue is primarily driven by violence, conflict, human rights violations, and persecution (Peters, 2017). The Internal Displacement Monitoring Center reported that violence and conflict triggered over eight million new displacements in over fifty countries in 2020 alone (Foden, 2021). Some displaced people fled their countries and became refugees, looking for asylum in different host republics. Others remained in their home countries, facing the risk of more conflicts and violence (Foden, 2021). Usually, those who escape the insecure regions encounter immense challenges in reestablishing themselves in strange areas, often with inadequate economic, social, and cultural support.

This project proposes a creation of a neighborhood for internally and externally displaced refugees. The neighborhood will not isolate refugees from the rest of society like with most refugee neighborhoods but will promote interaction between refugees and the surrounding communities. The primary outcome of the proposed refugee neighborhood is to ensure refugees do not live in isolation and have an opportunity to develop themselves, reducing their reliance on aid from the government and well-wishers.
