Question Description

In the role of consultant, respond to at least two primary school-focused post AND at least one high school-focused post in the following way:

  • Provide one suggestion as to how your consultee might modify the program/initiative to attain different results based on their identified needs.
  • If the ALP creator expresses resistance to your suggestion, how might you effectively respond to that resistance and still communicate the benefits of your suggestion? as you will assist your colleagues in reviewing their ALPs and, using your professional knowledge and understanding of consultation, suggest ways in which they might potentially receive different results.
  • These are the ones you have to give suggestion:

Unexpected Result When Implementing ALP When I implement my Financial Preparedness Plan, a possible issue that may arise is a lack of parent involvement. Parents will be allowed to attend the virtual sessions with their students so that they can aid them with their financial plans. For students who will be independent for the purposes of their FAFSA, they may not need as much of their parents’ help or information, but it would still be ideal to have them involved. For students who will be dependent, they will definitely need their parents’ help and information. If parents are unable to attend the sessions, they may not fully understand how to fill out the FAFSA and need additional support. If parents are not engaged or for some reason unable to assist their students, this could impact students’ ability to fill out their practice FAFSA, which would then decrease the number of completed FAFSA financial plans.Needs from Consultant This would be a situation where I could consult with other school counselors for support in implementing my ALP. Dougherty (2013) described that consultants can use problem-solving skills to support their consultees by defining the problem, gathering data, and developing and evaluating interventions. For my ALP, I need support with engaging parents in the financial planning process so that my students can successfully complete their practice FAFSA financial plans. I am hoping to find a way to gather data about how many students are encountering this as a roadblock so that I can intervene as necessary. With that being said, what might be the most successful intervention in this case to increase parent involvement? Would it be more beneficial to try to invite specific parents to engage in one on one meetings or offer a few options for times to host a general parent meeting? For parents whose employment situation is uncertain due to the pandemic, how can I help them accurately fill out their forms? What if there are some parents who simply refuse to allow me to help them because they do not want me to be involved in their financial situation? I think that my program addresses students in terms of their financial needs, but I am interested in finding a way to work with parents as well so that they can provide accurate information to their students for their financial plans.

Unexpected Results and Challenges That May Occur with the ALP Something unexpected that may occur based on the ALP is if the 9th-grade freshman students have a higher rate of absences than based on what was stated on the SMART goals. If that happens my data would be thrown off and the SMART goal may have to change partway through the year due to the numbers being skewed. There are two challenges that I can see being a problem. The first challenge is taking into students being sick or out of school for other personal reasons (such as dentist appointments, doctor appointments, or other personal appointments for the students). This would make it hard to tell if they were absences based on personal choice or absences based on something that a student needs to get done. The second challenging factor would be if the teachers don’t put the attendance in for some reason. This would make it hard to tell if the student is in class since there wasn’t attendance taken for that day or maybe the attendance was put in on the following day. These challenges would make keeping track of attendance and seeing if the number of absences decreases during that time frame. Needs From the Consultant For the ALP When working with consultants I would like to advocate for multiple check-ins with the 9th-grade freshman students throughout the year. These sessions could be one-on-one with freshman students or a small group of 9th graders run by school counselors to get a general idea of how they are doing. In addition, it would be important to ask the consultant to also help check-in with the teachers and advisors as well to see if the 9th graders are both present and attending within the classroom. Furthermore, it would be helpful to see how the students are doing academically and socially to make sure they still have a positive transition or if they need more supports to help them ease into high school more comfortably .
