Nursing is about taking care of patients and putting the interest of patients before any other activity in a healthcare setting. The importance of valuing patients in nursing practices was well presented in Henderson’s nursing theory. Based on the theory, nursing is a unique function that requires nurses to help the people, whether sick or healthy in effectively performing functions of those activities that contribute to people being healthy or recover quickly if they are sick (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). Henderson believed that by having the strength and knowledge on how to improve their health, individuals will be able to help themselves even in the absence of healthcare professionals. To achieve this, she identified four major concepts that she viewed as basic needs; basic needs of the individual, the definition of health based on an individual’s ability to function independently, the living environment of the individual, and the concepts of nursing that nurses take care of when people are sick (Smith & Parker, 2015). Helping patients gain knowledge in the four areas was considered as the key to increasing patient independence which is critical in improving the quality of healthcare services.
