You need to watch two films before writing this essay.

Grizzly Man depicts two filmmaking projects. The first is the video Timothy Treadwell was making, seen in fragments of recovered footage he shot. The second is Herzogs take on Treadwells video, plus the addition of his own footage and narration. Both projects are distinct in their thematic motivations, cinematographic choices, edit and assembly schemes, and narrative outcomes.

For this assignment, you are to write a 4-5 page paper describing the following:

• Treadwells vision and formal means of accomplishing it
• Herzogs vision and formal means of accomplishing it
• At least one moment/scene in which these visions collide or provocatively interact

Instead of taking Treadwell and Herzog as competitors (in which, for example, Herzog wins), consider them as being engaged in a conversation: what are they saying to each other? And how are they saying it?

Your paper should include the following:

• A careful description of at least one moment/scene from the film, using the formal vocabulary of film analysis (e.g. terms learned and used in class to describe mise-en-scene, cinematography, and editing choices)
• An analysis of how these two filmmakers’ visions provocatively interact within that moment/scene
• A consideration of how that particular interaction illustrates the film’s larger meanings
• A bibliography if you include outside research (it is not necessary to refer to materials beyond the scope of what weve used in class)
• Proofreading and clear, uncluttered prose
