This week we began discussing the scientific theory in The Baroque Age II.  In two pages discuss the controversy surrounding the heliocentric theory developed in the 17th century and Francis Bacon’s Four Idols.  In your discussion consider the following questions: 

• What was the heliocentric theory and how did it differ from previous theories about the sun?
• How did they come up with the heliocentric theory?
• What was the controversy surrounding the heliocentric theory?  (What were the arguments against the heliocentric theory?)
• Why was this a controversy?
• Which of Francis Bacon’s "Four IdolsLinks to an external site." can help to explain people’s reactions to the heliocentric theory?  (Explain why you think this.)

Once you’ve answered this consider if we have the same struggles today.  

• Do we still have similar struggles over new scientific theories?  
• If so, in what way and to what degree?  
• Are the controversies concerning modern scientific theories similar to the heliocentric theory?  
• Which, if any, of Francis Bacon’s "Four Idols" might help explain people’s reasoning?  (Explain why you think this)
• Is there any way to resolve them?
