Financial Statement Ratio Analysis Assignment

Deadline: Friday, December 17 (No late submission will be accepted)

Requirements:
1. Select a public company and identify its ticker symbol
a. Some companies you can use: Walmart Inc. (WMT); Apple Inc. (AAPL); Tesla
(TSLA)
b. You can pick any company you are interested in
2. Locate its most recent annual reports (10–K) using SECs EDGAR database
a. Link: https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html
b. Use the ticker symbol to search for the companys annual reports
c. Find the most recent 10–K filing for that company (Hint: there are a lot of
different types of filings, like 10–Q, 10–K/A, 8–K, and proxy statements, but this
assignment focuses on 10–Ks.)
3. Find the Balance Sheet and Income Statement (or Statement of Operations) in that 10–
K filing, and find the reported amount for the following items:
a. Total assets
b. Total liabilities
c. Revenue (or Net Sales)
d. Net income
(Hint: The financial statements are usually listed in Item 8)
4. Calculate the following ratios (Hint: You need to show the formulas and procedures of
the calculation):
a. Debt to Asset Ratio
b. Return on Asset
5. For each of these ratios, discuss what benchmark(s) you would use to conduct subsequent
analyses for the company. By comparing these ratios with the benckmark(s) you pick,
what information of the company you can tell the investors?
