Cancer Genetics Research Paper (100 points!)
For this paper, you will refer to the following steps, as well as the rubrics, to construct and organize your research paper.
Step 1: Select a cancer to research.
The following websites provide a large list of cancers to choose from:
- American Cancer Society ()
- National Cancer Institute A to Z List of Cancers ()
- National Cancer Institute Common Cancer Types ()
Step 2: Research the following potential genetic abnormalities (mutations and gene expression alterations) observed in the cancer youve selected:
- Tumor suppressor genes
- Oncogenes
- DNA Repair genes
- MicroRNAs (miRNAs)
- Chromosomal alterations
- Other genes that are common mutational targets in development of the cancer type
Some helpful research websites:
Step 3: Write a two – three-page research paper (not including the title or reference pages) on genetic alterations commonly observed for the cancer youve selected. As you write your paper, use the following the outline:
- Introduction paragraph
- Briefly introduce the cancer youve selected.
- Is the cancer typically inherited or sporadic?
- Main body (researched from Step 2)
- What are several specific genetic abnormalities commonly observed for the cancer?
- If known, which specific mutations are considered driver mutations and which are passenger mutations?
- How do the genetic abnormalities increase cancer risk? (i.e., what role do these abnormalities play in the development of cancer)?
- Conclusion: Biblical perspective
- How could you utilize a biblical worldview when interacting and communicating with a suffering patient?
- How would you respond to a patient who blames God for his/her debilitating or incurable disease?
*It is expected that you research your topic by examining at least two major sources other than the textbook. Write the paper in Microsoft Word and format it according to APA standards (exception an abstract is not required).
