This is a larger, more formal essay, 5-7 pages long double spaced.  It should be carefully organized and written.

It will deal with the Mead vs. Freeman controversy

It should be organized as an  introduction to the debate; then each question gets its own paragraphs, with the question as the heading. 

Introduction:  briefly summarize what the controversy is about.  

1. Who do you believe about  adolescence on Samoa? Judge and justify each argument: Mead: what does she say its like?  What does Freeman say? What does the Samoan woman in the movie say?

2. Let’s presume that Mead and Freeman were truthful in reporting what they saw and heard.  What are some reasons why they disagree about what was going on? Why would they hear different things? How did their field sites, dates of observation, and gender  affect their studies?

3. What were Freeman’s reasons for writing a book discrediting Mead’s work? What different theoretical views did they hold going into the field?

4.  If every researcher gets a different result, can anthropology ever be a science? How can we find the "truth" about Samoa, or is that impossible (unless your are Samoan!)?

Conclusion: 1 paragraph
