For this paper, choose one of the following topics:

• What kind of "good" is health care (a commodity, a social obligation, or a human right, etc.), and what mechanisms do you think should be used to distribute it in society?
• Do wealthier societies have an ethical obligation to help those internationally who suffer from poverty-related illnesses?  
• Of the major definition of death that was covered in Week 7, which do you agree with most?  What are most important implications of this definition?
• What are the significant ethical issues raised in the case study "Erring on the Side of Theresa Schiavo: Reflections of the Special Guardian Ad Litem" (p. 369), and how do you think we should approach such situations in the future in making a decision for a once-competent patient?
• What are the significant ethical issues raised in the case study "Termination of Life-Support for a Never-Competent Patient: The Case of Sheila Pouliot" (p. 417), and how do you think we should approach such situations in the future in making a decision for a never-competent patient?

Once you have decided on your topic, construct a paper that lays out your position and the reasons for your position.  You will need to specifically identify the problem highlighted in your topic, the ethical foundations that you are working from (i.e. the ethical theories and details you are using for your reasoning), and counterarguments that you would anticipate to your position.

In this paper, you are required to include:

-       A thesis that asserts your decision in the given scenario or topic

-       A description of the problem you are trying to answer, including aspects that make it difficult to solve

-       An explanation of the relevant aspects of the ethical theory or theories that you are operating from

-     A clear argument for your position

-       At least one criticism or objection that you anticipate to your proposal, and your response to this objection.
